Quartz crucible is a high-temperature container made of high-purity quartz sand, widely used in semiconductor manufacturing, metallurgy, materials science, and laboratory fields.
Its special chemical properties are mainly reflected in the following aspects:
1. Chemical inertness
The main component of quartz crucible is silicon dioxide (SiO ₂), which has extremely high chemical inertness. It hardly reacts with any chemical reagents at room temperature, only reacting with hydrofluoric acid (HF) and caustic soda (such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide) under specific conditions. This chemical inertness makes it an ideal container for many chemical reactions, effectively avoiding chemical interference between crucible materials and reactants, ensuring purity and stability during experiments or production processes.
2. Acid and alkali resistance
Quartz crucibles have good resistance to most acids and bases. It does not react with inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid at room temperature, but reacts chemically with caustic soda and alkali metal carbonates such as sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate at high temperatures. In addition, quartz crucibles are not suitable for hydrofluoric acid environments as hydrofluoric acid can rapidly corrode quartz.
3. Low adhesion
The surface structure of quartz crucible is compact and has extremely low adsorption. Compared with ordinary glass containers, it is less likely to adsorb impurities in gases or solutions, and can maintain the original purity of reactants, thereby improving the accuracy and reliability of experiments. This characteristic gives it an irreplaceable position in the fields of semiconductor manufacturing and materials science, which require extremely high purity.
4. Thermal stability
Quartz crucibles have a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which means they are less prone to deformation or rupture when subjected to temperature changes. In addition, the melting point of quartz crucible is as high as 1710 ℃, which can maintain stability in high temperature environments. Its maximum continuous use temperature is about 1200 ℃, and it can even withstand temperatures up to 1450 ℃ in short-term applications. This excellent thermal stability enables it to be used for a long time under high temperature conditions without being damaged by thermal stress.
5. Transparency
Quartz crucibles have good transparency and high transparency to ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) radiation. This characteristic makes it excellent in applications that require observation of reaction processes, such as spectroscopic analysis, photochemical reactions, and crystal growth.
6. Low pollution
Compared with graphite crucibles, quartz crucibles do not produce carbon pollution, making them more suitable for processes that require higher material purity. In addition, the high purity of quartz crucibles also enables them to effectively avoid the introduction of impurities in semiconductor manufacturing, thereby ensuring the purity of single crystal silicon.
7. Can be used in conjunction with specific fluxes
Quartz crucibles are suitable for use with certain fluxes such as potassium bisulfate, sodium bisulfate, and sodium thiosulfate to melt samples. These fluxes can react with the sample at high temperatures, while quartz crucibles are not corroded or involved in the reaction.
The special chemical properties of quartz crucibles make them excellent in high temperature, chemical inertness, low adsorption, and transparency. These characteristics not only make it an indispensable tool in laboratories and industrial production, but also provide reliable guarantees for the preparation of high-purity materials and the conduct of complex chemical reactions. However, quartz crucibles also have some limitations, such as being fragile and not suitable for high alkaline materials. Therefore, it is necessary to choose suitable materials and operating conditions according to specific needs when using, in order to fully leverage its advantages.
