What Common Experimental Operations Are Suitable for Quartz Crucible

Quartz crucible is an experimental refractory made of high-purity quartz, which has good high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and chemical stability, and is widely used in a variety of experimental operations.

I. Melting experiment

1. Acid flux melting:

- Quartz crucibles are suitable for sample melting using acidic fluxes such as K2O, KHSO. These fluxes react with the sample at high temperatures to generate soluble salts for subsequent chemical analysis.

- For example, when analyzing the composition of an ore, K 2O S 2O O is used as a flux, and the ore sample is melted in quartz crucible. The resulting melt can be used for subsequent acidification and elemental analysis.

2. Specific alkaline flux melting:

- Quartz crucibles can be used to treat samples with Na 2O S 2O (first dried at 212 ° C) as a flux. However, it should be noted that quartz crucibles are prone to react with caustic alkalis and alkali metal carbonates (such as NaOH, Na 2O CO 3) at high temperatures, so they are not suitable for these strongly alkaline fluxes.

Scope of application of quartz crucible

II. High temperature reaction

1. Powder sintering:

- Quartz crucibles can be used in the sintering process of powders, capable of withstanding high temperatures and maintaining chemical stability. For example, when preparing ceramic materials, the powder is placed in quartz crucible and sintered at high temperatures to obtain dense ceramic products.

2. Metal and graphite sintering:

- Quartz crucibles can be used for the sintering of graphite and metal materials. During graphite sintering, quartz crucibles are able to ensure that the sample reaches a higher temperature, thus achieving complete sintering. During metal sintering, quartz crucibles also protect the sample from oxidation and provide a uniform heating environment.

III. Chemical analysis experiments

1. Chemical reactions at high temperatures:

- Quartz crucibles can be used for chemical reactions at high temperatures, such as the burning of platinum salts. Its resistance to high temperatures and chemical attack makes it excellent in high-temperature chemical reactions.

2. Corrosion test:

- Quartz crucibles can be used for corrosion experiments to study the corrosion behavior of materials at high temperatures. Its chemical inertness ensures that the crucible itself does not interfere with the experimental results during the experiment.

IV. Biochemical experiments

1. Biological sample processing:

- Quartz crucibles can be used for the processing of biological samples, such as DNA denaturation, amino acid sequence analysis, etc. Its high quality and stability ensure that biological samples are not damaged under high temperature conditions.

V. Materials preparation experiments

1. Material synthesis:

- Quartz crucibles can be used in material synthesis processes, such as the preparation of new composites. Its good resistance to high temperature and chemical attack makes it an ideal high-temperature reaction vessel.

VI. Cleaning and maintenance

1. Cleaning:

- Quartz crucibles can be used as cleaning liquid except for hydrofluoric acid (HF). After use, rinse with water first, then soak in dilute acid, and finally rinse with water.

2. Maintenance:

- When using quartz crucibles, care should be taken to avoid excessive hot and cold alternation, so as not to damage their performance. At the same time, quartz crucibles are brittle and easy to break, and should be handled with care during operation.

VII. Precautions

1. Temperature limitations:

The quartz crucible can be used below 1700 ° C, but when the burning temperature is higher than 1100 ° C, the quartz will become opaque, so the melting temperature should not exceed 800 ° C.

2. Chemical compatibility:

At high temperatures, quartz crucibles are highly susceptible to carbonation of caustic and alkali metals, so caution is required when selecting fluxes.

Due to its excellent high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and chemical stability, quartz crucibles perform well in a variety of experimental operations and are one of the indispensable instruments in the laboratory.
