Quartz glass and ordinary glass both contain silica, but ordinary glass contains much sodium silicate,
while quartz glass contains more silica. It's a big difference in composition.
Quartz glass is a special glass made from silica, its hardness and transparency are much higher than
ordinary glass. It has resistance to high temperature, wear and tear, resistance to attack. These are not
available in ordinary glass.
The structure of quartz glass is loose, allowing ion diffusion of certain gases at high temperatures,
of which sodium ion diffusion is the fastest.
This performance of quartz glass is important, for example, the semiconductor industry with quartz
glass as a high temperature container or diffusion tube, because of the high purity of the
semiconductor material, so the requirements and quartz glass contact as a furnace lining refractory
must be pre-processed by high temperature and cleaning, remove potassium, sodium and other
alkaline impurities, and then can be put into the quartz glass for use.
At room temperature, quartz glass can be considered to be airtight, and at high temperatures (e.g. 700℃),
the air permeability constant of certain gases is also very small. Therefore, it can be used in high temperature
and high vacuum equipment.
