Fiber optic manufacturing quartz rod
Fiber optic quartz rod, also known as fiber optic preform, is the core raw material for manufacturing optical fibers. The production process of fiber preform has a significant impact on the mechanical strength, transmission characteristics, and service life of optical fibers, and is a key step in ensuring fiber quality. There are various methods for producing fiber preform rods, including MCVD (Improved Chemical Vapor Deposition), VAD (Vapor Axial Deposition), OVD (External Vapor Deposition), and PCVD (Plasma Chemical Vapor Deposition).
The MCVD process is a common manufacturing method developed by Bell Laboratories in 1974. This process involves introducing a gaseous mixture of SiCl4 (silicon chloride), GeCl4 (germanium chloride), and other chemicals into a quartz glass tube (cladding) and rotating it for heating outside the quartz tube. In this way, silicon and germanium undergo oxidation reactions to form SiO2 (silicon dioxide) and GeO2 (germanium dioxide), which reside inside the quartz tube and form the main part of the optical fiber.
Fiber preform rods generally have a diameter of several millimeters to several tens of millimeters, and are made of high-purity quartz glass rods made from germanium ore and polycrystalline silicon as raw materials, with the addition of hydrogen, helium, and other gases. In the industrial chain, the profit share of fiber optic preforms is as high as 70%, demonstrating its core position in the manufacturing of quartz series optical fibers.
Quartz rods play an important supporting role in the deposition of fiber preforms and fiber drawing processes. The quartz rod products provided by Luverre Quartz are suitable for VAD, OVD and other fiber drawing processes. Its high-quality fused silica material has good uniformity and appearance quality.
In general, quartz rods are a key material in the fiber manufacturing process, and their quality and craftsmanship directly affect the performance and application of the final fiber.
