Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What are the fundamental differences between JGS1 transparent UV quartz plates and JGS2 and JGS3?

A: JGS1 is a far-ultraviolet optical quartz glass manufactured from synthetic quartz. It features extremely high transmittance and no absorption bands in the 185–2500 nm wavelength range, making it particularly suitable for short-wavelength ultraviolet applications. JGS2 is primarily used in the 220–2500 nm wavelength range, while JGS3 is geared toward infrared applications in the 260–3500 nm range.

Q2: What are the optical advantages of quartz plates with a thickness of 5–10 mm?

A: 5–10 mm is a commonly used thickness for precision optical windows and laser protection. This specification maintains extremely high transmittance from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared (with transmittance in the visible light region reaching over 93%) while providing excellent surface flatness (e.g., λ/10) and extremely low parallelism deviation, effectively reducing optical path difference and wavefront distortion.

Q3: Can your company provide custom sizes and specialized coating services?

A: Absolutely. We offer custom machining for outer diameters ranging from 1 mm to over 600 mm, with thickness tolerances controlled within ±0.05 mm. Additionally, our cleanroom facilities support precision coating services for single-sided/double-sided anti-reflective (AR) coatings, high-reflective (HR) coatings, and various protective coatings.

Q4: Is this type of quartz plate stable in high-temperature or highly acidic/alkaline environments?

A: It is extremely stable. JGS1 quartz plates have a softening point as high as 1730°C and can be used long-term at 1100°C. Except for hydrofluoric acid, it reacts with virtually no acidic substances; its acid resistance is 150 times that of stainless steel, making it fully capable of withstanding extreme chemical and thermal environments.

Addressing Users’ Core Needs and Challenges

In practical precision optical R&D and industrial manufacturing, users often face challenges such as severe absorption by conventional glass in the UV spectrum, deformation and shattering in high-temperature environments, and short service life of window plates in highly corrosive environments. The 5–10 mm JGS1 transparent UV quartz plate was specifically designed to overcome these challenges. It not only ensures high-fidelity light transmission across the entire spectrum from the far-ultraviolet to the near-infrared, resolving signal attenuation issues in spectral analysis; its extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion and exceptional thermal shock resistance completely eliminate the risk of thermal stress fractures in observation windows for high-power lasers or high-temperature furnace chambers. Furthermore, its extremely high chemical inertness provides a long-lasting, maintenance-free optical barrier for demanding applications such as semiconductor etching and specialized light sources, significantly reducing users’ equipment maintenance costs.

Optical Performance Advantages

JGS1 has an average transmittance of approximately 90% in the 185–2500 nm wavelength range, with transmittance values of >85% at 185 nm, >85% at 200 nm, >85% at 220 nm, >87% at 240 nm, and >90% at 300 nm. Plates with thicknesses of 5–10 mm maintain high transmittance even in the deep ultraviolet region. Furthermore, they feature a particle-free structure across the entire wavelength range and low fluorescence, ensuring a pure optical path.

Physical and Chemical Stability

Density: 2.20 g/cm³; refractive index: 1.4586 (at 588 nm); extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion; excellent thermal shock resistance; resistant to acid and alkali corrosion (except for hydrofluoric acid and high-temperature phosphoric acid); capable of long-term stable operation under rapid temperature changes and in corrosive environments.

Customization Capabilities

Standard thicknesses of 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, and 10 mm are available, with length and width dimensions customizable to meet specific requirements. We can process everything from miniature components (e.g., 4 × 4 mm) to large panels. Value-added services include precision edge polishing, protective chamfering, and surface coating (anti-reflective or reflective coatings).

Customer Application Cases

Case 1: A Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturer—Alignment System Window for Lithography Machines

Customer Requirements: A rectangular JGS1 window with a thickness of 8 mm and dimensions of 120 × 80 mm, requiring a transmittance of >80% at 193 nm, surface profile accuracy of λ/4, and surface quality of 40–20.

Solution: We used high-purity synthetic JGS1 blanks, which were precision-ground and polished. Surface profile was measured using an interferometer, and transmittance was verified with a UV spectrophotometer. The delivered product achieved a measured transmittance of 82.3% at 193 nm and a surface profile accuracy of λ/6. The customer accepted the product on the first attempt, and has since placed bulk orders for use in next-generation equipment upgrades.

Case Study 2: A Research Institute—Vacuum Ultraviolet Reaction Chamber Viewport

Customer Requirements: A circular JGS1 window with a diameter of 150 mm and a thickness of 10 mm, intended for use in a vacuum chamber (10⁻⁶ Pa). The window must withstand baking at 200°C and achieve a transmittance of >80% at 200 nm.

Solution: To meet the vacuum sealing requirements, we optimized the edge polishing process and controlled parallelism to within 10 arcseconds. Post-delivery, actual transmittance testing at 200 nm measured 81.5%. The window passed the vacuum sealing test and has been in continuous operation for over 6 months without any performance degradation.

Case 3: An Environmental Monitoring Equipment Company—Optical Window for an Online Water Quality Analyzer

Customer Requirements: A 25 mm diameter, 5 mm thick JGS1 window for the deep ultraviolet (254 nm) digestion and detection optical path, requiring resistance to hydrolysis and the absence of stray light during long-term immersion in water.

Solution: We employed precision polishing to achieve a surface roughness of <0.5 nm and optimized the cleaning process. After delivery, transmittance consistency reached ±0.5%, with the window surface free of scratches and contamination; the customer has since included it in their standard bill of materials.
